Fair Cake – the journey continues…

This post has been a long time coming… where do I even begin?

Let me start by saying that it’s been a very eventful time for Fair Cake since October 2019.

First and foremost, the ownership changed hands. I, Uma- the new owner, can only say how tremendously lucky I am to be in a position to carry forward the legacy that Fair Cake has created. This being said, Shikhita is a force to be reckoned with. I am sure Shikhita will be making special appearances every now and again.

A little bit about me. I have a varied background – TV, finance / compliance and baking. My baking obsession started as a hobby but soon turned into a passion and I now run a wedding cake business in West Sussex. The cakes are on hold as I have a bun in the oven.

After taking over Fair Cake, it was incredibly important to me to create cake classes that allowed students to go home armed with the knowledge they would need to get started on their baking journey – personal and professional. With that in mind we created the Baking and Decorating class which covers the basics of baking and decorating. We designed two other classes for students wanting to up their decorating game – The Contemporary Wedding Cakes and Modern Wedding Cakes class. These classes have been quite popular and we look forward to welcoming new faces as well as familiar ones into the studio.

March 2020 saw us hosting our very first vegan class. This was taught by the indomitable Marianne Stewart and was quite a success. Sadly this was the last class we taught before the lockdown was imposed upon us. It has been a very trying time for all of us and we are ever so grateful to our NHS for having fought this battle so valiantly. It is true… not all superheroes wear capes. Some wear scrubs and crocs and we are tremendously lucky to have them fight for us. As a lot of you know, the workshop has remained closed during these unprecedented times. We have been following the government advice and if all goes to plan, we should be able to open on the 4th of July and our classes will resume on the 20th of July 2020, with additional dates announced in due course.

In keeping with government advice, we will be ensuring there is a 2m distance between the teacher and the students and between the students themselves. This would mean that spaces will be very limited – 4 per class – and classes will sell out faster than usual.

Each student will be given a face mask which they must wear at all times during the class.

We have used the time during the lockdown to work on some exciting stuff. To name a few – new website, which will launch very soon and we look forward to receiving your feedback. New classes, more on those later as I’m holding that information very close to me.

For now, I’d like to sign off by saying a massive ‘Thank You’ to our loyal followers, old students and new who have kept us going through it all.

We look forward to throwing open the doors to our workshop very soon, and to meeting old faces and new.

Love and light,
